The cost of rail travel is set to soar next year, with the average regulated fare - which includes season tickets - going up 8 per cent as commuters suffer yet more misery on the train.

The Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation figure announced this morning, was unchanged at 5 per cent - these figure impact how much train firms can increase rail fares by.

This year, increases have been calculated differently, as train companies are now allowed to put up fares by 3 per cent on top of the RPI measure of inflation for July.
